Girls work together to succeed for soccer season
April 5, 2022
With spring just around the corner, spring sports are able to begin practicing for the season. Last year looked a little different. Due to COVID, the spring season was pushed back. Girls soccer is one of the spring sports that had to deal with COVID. The head coach for this year is Alejandro DeLeon, who was the assistant coach last year. Practices for the girls started on Monday with their first game being March 31 against Wautoma. For senior Cecilia Bruce-DeMuri, she says she is excited for the season to finally begin.
“I am excited for soccer this year. Last year the season was condensed and we did not have much time to practice in between games, so it will be nice to have a little more time to prepare,” Bruce-DeMuri said.
As for most sports, it is important to get practices in to help prepare for games. This allows for players to learn new skills and plays that will help them later on the field. For Bruce-DeMuri she had to learn a whole new position that she has never played before.
“Last year, I was asked to play goalie, which is something I had never done before. It was a huge learning curve for me and I was very apprehensive about it in the beginning, but it has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done,” Bruce-DeMuri said.
Sophomore Mackenzie Helmuth finds herself enjoying the bond that the team forms during practices, which is something she experienced during last year’s season.
“I really enjoy the bond we have as a team and how well we get along together because it makes practices and bus rides a lot more fun,” Helmuth said.
Soccer, like many other sports, is a team sport which means players have to rely on one another in order to succeed.
“I really enjoy the team aspect of soccer. In all the sports I have done, being able to work together and form friendships with my team members has been one of my favorite things I have ever done,” Bruce-DeMuri said.
With that being said, getting along with the team can bring many successful outcomes when it comes to games.
“There will be a lot of new players and a lot of old players gone, so the most important thing we have to do is work as a team, which will help us win more games,” Helmuth said.
