This cold and rainy spring has brought many challenges for the track team. Not only do they have to run in the cold, but a couple of meets have been canceled due to weather conditions. Although the weather is not cooperating with the team, they have continued to improve their skills. 

“This season has been pretty rough mentally due to the cold weather, but as a team we have pulled through and have been pretty successful,” sophomore Alex Budde said.

Even though the team has been pushing through the inclimate weather, that is not their only obstacle. With any sport, the athletes get injured and are not able to participate in the relays or other events.

“When teammates have an injury or are sick it affects us by trying to find a replacement for us. Sometimes the coaches have to put people they think will do good in those events because we don’t have others that run that specific event,” junior Jersey Reck said. 

The team is working very hard to get better every day. They have been getting quicker in their short distance sprints at every meet. 

“I would say our biggest strength is the sprints. Almost at every meet there has been a boy and a girl in the top four for the sprints,” junior Devin Derleth said.

Since most track events are individual, it comes with a lot of self reliance. Budde said that is something they struggle with, but the team is slowly continuing to work on their confidence.

“Something we have struggled with this season has been trusting ourselves and knowing what we are capable of. There have been times where we overthink things and have lacked confidence which causes us to not reach our full potential,” Budde said.

Although the team has many struggles, they have managed to make great strides to have a successful season. 

“I’m very proud of what our team has been though, we have not had a nice meet so far due to the weather. This makes our team stronger because everyone has made a new personal record this season and everyone kept coming to practice even when it was bad conditions to run in,” Reck said.

The team competes at their next meet tomorrow at home against Kettle Moraine Lutheran and Plymouth.
