Red ‘n’ Green staff wins first place

The Red ‘n’ Green staff won the blue ribbon for their news website at the NEWSPA (Northeast Wisconsin Scholastic Press Association) conference at UW Oshkosh April 11. The Red ‘n’ Green has won 11 blue ribbons out of the last 13 years. The Red ‘n’ Green has been attending NEWSPA since at least 1976. Berlin is one of the founding schools of the NEWSPA organization.

Key Club makes shamrock shakes to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
Academic Decathlon went to state on March 6 and 7, and took nine members from their club to the Tundra Lodge in Green Bay WI where Berlin placed 18th overall in the state competition, and third in their division. “The students take objective tests in the different subject areas, give a speech, do an interview, and participate in the Super Quiz Relay,” adviser Nick Kvam said.

Focusing on self-care can help students and teachers alike deal with the stresses that come with midterms. “I think if I had to go through my years of service here in this counseling role, you would probably find an uptick in mental health issues during the middle of the second semester,” counselor Matthew Willet said.
Students feel stressed during midterms
Senior Callie Kurczek gives blood on Feb. 26 during the Key Club blood drive. Only 19 people donated blood during the drive. “The first time is a little nerve-wracking, but after you do it, it’s a good feeling to know that you’re helping people,” Kurczek said.
Blood drive faces low numbers
Recently the club has had an increase in membership allowing them to do more activities/competitions. “Forensics is a public speaking competition, with a variety of presentation choices like different types of acting, informational speech, storytelling, and even debate and radio announcing are categories,” social studies teacher Ryan Scanlan said.

The Magoosh software plays a video explaining a practice problem. “There is a lot of clarification on different styles of questions that the students will see,” ACT prep adviser Matt Willett said.

The Red 'n' Green is hosting a March Madness Challenge. Entries are due March 20 at noon. Prizes will be awarded on April 9.

McCormick and Budde chosen as February Student of the Month
Seniors Charlotte Ars and Lisa Vizzari are foreign exchange students, Ars is from Belgium and Vizzari is from Italy. They are taking a year of school in America. Ars and Vizzari were walking in the snow on the golf course enjoying the cold weather. “I am going to make the most of my summer and spend my time with friends and family. I also need to study because in September I'll start my senior year of high school in Italy and I have exams on the subjects they did this year,” Vizzari said.

Tess Kujawa is a Berlin High School senior. She is excited to spend her last year writing for the Red ‘n’ Green as a reporter. She is also a part of the band, the student council, and is president of the finance club.
