On Nov. 5 the referendum is on the ballot again. The Board of Education is hoping to have it passed so that they can exceed their revenue limit over the next four years. Passing this is incredibly important in order to maintain the school.
One main reason we need this referendum is that if it fails, teaching and staff positions will be reduced by 10%. Without these teachers and staff, fewer classes will be offered, the variety of which many students have expressed an appreciation of. This will cause classes to grow to a size unbeneficial to students. More students in one class can lead to lower student engagement, strain on teachers, and could make it more difficult for the teacher to manage the class and make the content engaging. This would overall have a negative impact on student achievement. There is also a need for the referendum to pass for maintenance and repairs. Without it, many parts of the district will be in disrepair.
Some people are against the referendum because if it passes, the funds will be added to their taxes. While this is an understandable worry, when looking at how much more people will have to pay, it is not an exorbitant amount. We at the Red ‘n’ Green feel that the benefit of the school outweighs the added costs.
Overall, The Red ‘n’ Green feels that the referendum is essential and that anyone eligible should vote “Yes” on Nov. 5.
