BHS launched their production of ‘The Lightning Thief’ on November 14, 15, and 16. The show centers around Percy Jackson, played by senior Aidan Pierstorff. The musical opens with Percy and his friend Grover Underwood, played by senior Andrew Rozek, on a school field trip together. The trip takes a drastic turn as Percy is attacked by Mrs. Dodds, their substitute teacher who is actually a Fury. She is played by junior Addison Dominick. After this interaction, Percy is expelled and has to face his mother Sally, played by junior Makayla Trochinski. She consoles him and works with Grover to bring him to Camp Half-Blood, where Sally distracts a minotaur to get Percy to Camp Half-Blood safely and disappears. Percy then embarks on a quest to save his mom and prevent a war between the Greek gods by restoring Zeus’s stolen lightning bolt.
Overall, this musical was incredibly engaging for the audience. Charged musical pieces such as “Put You in Your Place” and “Another Terrible Day” ramped up the energy in the musical, while pieces such as “The Tree on the Hill” and “Strong” were incredibly emotional and really made the audience feel for the characters. Along with these electric songs came energetic choreography that heightened these different songs, especially with the fight scenes orchestrated throughout the musical. The vocals in the songs were excellent and well rehearsed, creating an incredibly powerful atmosphere throughout the entire performance.
The lighting for the musical was also an incredible addition that added to the ambiance of the experience. There are multiple solos Percy sings where he’s framed by a spotlight, the spotlight changing colors based on the scene, going pink when Annabeth appears in his dream and blue when he’s talking to Poseidon. The lighting played to the stage crew as well, all of whom were never seen throughout the musical and transported props onstage with surprising agility while remaining invisible. The transitions between scenes and acts were seamless, pulling the audience into each song and scene as they happened. Overall, this musical was absolutely stunning, earning a rating of 5/5.
