Recently, students at BHS have used a 3D printer at school to print out a 3D model of a teacher’s head as a surprise gift. Allowing students to use the 3D printer is an excellent opportunity for students to use new technology and explore different creative options.
Teaching students to use a 3D printer is a valuable skill that students can use for future professions. It can be a beneficial tool for students to exercise their creativity, practice communication, envision 3D models, and teach technological literacy that can give students an advantage in job applications. It also allows students to have fun during school while trying out a new tool and has the potential to spark passion in students that were previously unable to use tools like this. Students that struggle to learn through reading or instruction can particularly benefit from using a 3D printer, as it can be more useful as a visual learning tool.
Overall, The Red ‘n’ Green feels that allowing students to use the 3D printer at school allows students to build creativity and collaboration skills. Students should take advantage of this opportunity to use a resource they may otherwise be unable to try out again. Teachers should also implement 3D printing when they can into their courses in order to let students take advantage of this opportunity.
