“A Minecraft Movie” is a modern and adventurous adaptation of the well-known video game, ‘Minecraft’. With a dynamic cast, tons of Easter eggs, and plenty of well-timed jokes, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ is enjoyable for everybody, especially fans of the game. With special appearances from popular Minecraft Youtubers, the movie brought together people from all fan bases while also paying tribute to the Minecraft community as a whole.
The film follows a group of people who get stuck in the Minecraft realm, and their only way home is to defeat the piglins and save the overworld. The adventurous plot on top of the live-action animation helped to capture the true essence of Minecraft while also setting it aside from other video game movies.
“A Minecraft Movie” used a combination of real-life actors, voice actors, and a lot of CGI and animation techniques. This live-action animation approach allowed for the film to include aspects from Minecraft while also incorporating well-known actors and Youtubers to give it more personality.
The main cast includes notable actors such as Jack Black (Steve) and Jason Momoa (Garrett Garrison) who both add humour and charismatic presences. Other actors in the main cast include Sebastian Hansen (Henry), Emma Myers (Natalie), and Danielle Brooks (Dawn), who each add their own humour, plot lines, and ideas into the movie.
In addition to the main cast the film incorporates multiple Easter eggs, including cameos from well-known Minecraft Youtubers such as DanTDM and CaptainSparklez. While these creators only appear for short moments as background characters, they still add a special touch and act as a connection to the Minecraft gaming community. One of these Easter eggs within the film that can be argued as the most special is the tribute to the late Minecraft Youtuber Technoblade. Technoblade died from cancer in June of 2022 and his avatar everywhere was a Minecraft pig with a pixel crown. Within the film a pig is seen wearing a crown, when Henry asks Steve if the pig is some sort of king, Steve responds with “No, that’s a legend.”This one detail added a lot of meaning to the movie, and paid tribute to a great Youtuber. This inclusion of Minecraft Youtubers served as a bridge between the gaming community and moviegoers, while also adding more depth to the movie.
In the box office, “A Minecraft Movie” has surpassed Disney and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World”, making it one of the highest grossing films of the year. According to Variety.com, the film has generated around $550.6 million globally, with around $281 million of those earnings generated in the United States. The success of the movie makes sense with the countless promotions, interviews, and collabs that helped bring attention to the movie before it even began. “A Minecraft Movie” seemed to be a success before it hit theaters, bringing fans and non-fans together through Minecraft McDonald’s meals and minigames within the actual game itself.
Overall, the promotion, actors, and actual Minecraft elements throughout the movie helped to make it more exciting, nostalgic, and enjoyable for the whole family. The blending of the creative Minecraft universe with the cinematic world sets the movie apart from others while also keeping it true to the game, making it deserving of a 5/5.
