Berlin’s Post Prom event delivered a safe way for students to celebrate the end of their prom night. It was held at the Boys and Girls Club in Berlin on May 3 and was centered on the Candyland theme. This Post Prom was a mix of fun, games, and entertainment.
Senior Josue Andrade-Ortega was one of many present at the party. For him and most of the students, the prizes are the part they are waiting for the most. The committee draws entrance tickets with students’ names on the back starting with the seniors before calling the students one by one. The students were all hoping to be in the first places to win the biggest prizes.
“My favorite part of the night was definitely when all the prizes were being picked,” Andrade-Ortega said.
The money for the prizes was raised by the parents in the committee from the Berlin community. Without the Berlin community and their generosity, all these prizes would not be available.
“There was some money in the budget. The rest of the money and donations came from local businesses and families. A letter was sent out to families and local businesses. Parents on the committee reached out to businesses as well,” parent Gina Fleegal said. “Our Berlin community and families were very generous and willingly donated some great prizes and money to provide a fun and safe night.”
The organization played a big role in the success of the night. Without such organization, the atmosphere, the fun, and the prizes would not have been the same.
“It takes a lot of organization. Amy Bartol was the chair of the committee and did a great job communicating and keeping everyone organized,” Fleegal said.
Post Prom gave a chance for students to celebrate in a way that they felt relaxed. This option made all the difference for some students.
“It allowed me to just wear what I wanted and spend time with friends like how I would outside of school, feeling like it was a more at home event and not school organized,” senior Fenix Cervantes said.
Students also had the opportunity to play games to win tickets to obtain a $100 bill. Two students who won a $100 bill were senior Aidan Pierstorff and senior Oliver Maxson. Apart from the prizes, taking part in the games is often a good opportunity to meet people or talk to people the students are not used to.
“It was a great way to get to know people whether it was during the carnival games or bingo,” Andrade-Ortega said.
This night was meaningful and important for seniors who celebrated the last dance of their high school career all together.
“I think it is important because it’s another way for our class to come together one last time in a calmer setting than the prom dance,” Andrade-Ortega said.
The parents’ willingness and dedication helped the evening run smoothly. They were involved and gave their time to make the night a success.
“We met for several months to discuss ideas. The different areas were divided up and parents helped to order and organize decorations, food, games and entertainment, and donations. We set up the Boys and Girls Club on Friday night to get ready,” Fleegal said.
Post Prom was a safe way to celebrate the end of their prom night. The students were around their friends as well as parents.
“I did feel safe because of the number of people and parents there,” Andrade-Ortega said.
Both seniors Cervantes and Andrare-Ortega would recommend the experience to future students to have the entire prom experience.
“I would recommend it. It’s a chance to win something and have fun with your friends,” Cervantes said.
