The varsity volleyball team ended their season 11-20 and 3-4 for their conference games.
“It went a lot better than we had expected coming into the season. We improved a lot since last year and I think we could have made a farther run, but overall I like how we ended our season,” outside defensive specialist Lauren Werch said.
This season, the district entered a new conference, allowing the players to be more evenly matched against their opponents.
“I didn’t feel there was any team we couldn’t stick with. In the conferences in the past there was always one or two teams that were just like in a higher caliber pool of people. This year I feel like there was still great competition, but it was the correct type of competition,” Head Coach Eydie Reiser said.
With more evenly matched composition, the girls were able to improve their skills.
“If I were to compare this year to last year, it was a lot more improvement,” defensive specialist Taylor Helmuth said.
The team faced challenges of all types, but one of the biggest barriers for the team was staying positive.
“One of our biggest challenges was after a loss trying to come back from it; we got really down,” Helmuth said.
Despite the challenges, the team made sure to encourage a stronger bond between teammates.
“We would always have a team dinner before a game; just talk for a couple hours and eat together. I think that helps with our bond a lot,” Helmuth said.
The team’s bond allowed them to perform better in competition.
“I think we have been one of the best competitive teams that we have seen in a couple years, when we attacked and were on the offense for example, we saw lots of success,” Reiser said.
With the end of the season comes the end of a senior’s high school career.
“(The season was) very memorable. We tried to make everything fun, went into practice doing our best, went into games doing our best knowing that it would be one of the last ones I will ever play,” Werch said.
