The varsity softball team took yet another win on Friday, May 15, against North Fond Du Lac with a score of 11-10. The team’s last home game of the season took place at the North field of Riverside Park.
Seniors Lakelyn Sobieski (shortstop) and Hailey Rodriguez (centerfield) were also celebrated on Senior Night shortly after the game ended. Softball head coach Kimberly Gensel shares how the game went overall.
“Our game against North Fondy was probably one of the best games we’ve played this season. (Junior) Riley Dempsey did a phenomenal job pitching, everyone contributed with their bats, our defense was solid, and we even had two home runs hit by Lakelyn Sobieski and (sophomore) Jaiden Buckholt,” Gensel said.
Rodriguez has been playing softball for eight years, starting in fourth grade. In the last softball game of her high school career, Rodriguez went 3-for-4 at bat with four RBI (run batted in). Rodriguez reflects fondly on her high school softball career and team.
“I couldn’t ask for a better team to end my high school career with,” Rodriguez said.
Sobieski hopes to continue her softball career at either Ripon College or the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Sobieski shares that her favorite memory from her senior-year softball season was from time spent on the field.
“My favorite moment of my senior year was hitting a home run during my first at–bat against North Fond Du Lac on senior night,” Sobieski said.
The Lady Indians have scored more during this softball season than they have in the last 10 years. Many personal records and achievements were accomplished during the game against North Fond Du Lac. Third base player Buckholt shares how she felt after she secured her first home run of her softball career.
“I was crying tears of joy, I was so proud of myself. I felt like I had so much power,” Buckholt said.
Gensel hopes she can give her team the most memorable season, not just from their performance and scores, but from the lasting impressions teammates and coaches have on each other.
“Looking back, you won’t always remember your record or your wins or losses, but you will remember the laughs and the memories made with your teammates,” Gensel said, “I hope as a coach I can give them those positive memories that they can take with them when they graduate.”
