While flowers in bloom, scattered rain, and warmer temperatures may be indicators of springtime, muddy dugouts, far-hit balls, and worn-in cleats are what the baseball team considers the first signs of the season starting. Currently 3-8, the team started on a high note, winning their first two conference games, though that streak was diminished not long after. Despite their loss, they have continued to put forth their best work.
“We have a stronger freshman class, which helps, and over the summer we had a lot of guys practicing together. Throughout the fall and into the winter, we’ve all been practicing together, and I think that’s contributed to our success,” captain Royce Lichtenberg said.
Along with newer players, Head Coach Darrin Schultz has also joined the team, and strives to improve their skills and make the team better as a whole.
“This is my first year as a high school baseball coach. I’ve coached youth sports for many years, including football, basketball, baseball, and softball,” Schultz said. “I’ve always enjoyed being around all sports, and I enjoy seeing athletes gain confidence through a season and improve.”
While playing sports is a great way to participate in a fun and athletic extracurricular, joining can also revive old pastimes, which motivates the player to keep going.
“I joined my freshman year right away because I love baseball. I’ve grown up playing it for a long time now. It’s just one of my favorite sports,” shortstop Weston Sawallish said.
Having leadership positions can give players more opportunities, but also can lead them to try harder, as they are role models to newer members.
“I became team captain this year. It’s important to me because I consider myself a leader, and the guys follow me throughout the year and listen to what I say. We all give into our team effort,” Lichtenberg said.
During the whole of the season, players can reach important goals and milestones, which can only inspire them to do better.
“My favorite moment is anytime an athlete does something they haven’t done before, and they realize it’s possible. Whether it’s striking a guy out, getting a hit, or making a diving catch, it’s all possible,” Schultz said.
