The varsity girl’s soccer team has played nine games this season, with a record of 2-7. The two wins were against Little Chute and Clintonville with two goals from sophomores Mackenzie Helmuth and Molly Shearer, and junior Elyse Osterberg to lead the team to the victories.
The team has been pleasantly surprised with their success so far. Junior defensive player April Ryckman is expecting a lot of improvement for the remainder of the season.
“Even though we have lost more than we won I feel like we are improving as a team. It’s kind of hard to play against schools that have more experience than we do as a team.” Ryckman said.
A key component to this season’s improvement has been midfielder Molly Shearer.
“So far I’d say the season is a success, we’ve come out with a few wins and goals which not a lot of us expected at first. Our best game so far was against Clintonville, the weather was nice, we scored some goals, had fun and ultimately came out with a win,” Shearer said.
Senior Cecilia Bruce-DeMuri has been the team’s starting goalie for the past two years. Bruce-DeMuri has helped the team to take the games to the 80-minute mark.
“Although these people scored the goals, I think our MVP is our goalie Cecilia. She has been doing very well in the goalie box. In our last game, she saved over 20 goals from going in,” Ryckman said.
The team is only half way through the season and they are continuing to improve. With the bad weather the team has had to play in very harsh conditions which can have a negative effect on the level of competition.
“I think the rest of the season is going to be a lot of fun, we’ve got a good group of girls on the field,” Shearer said.
Their next game is home on Thursday May 5 against Ripon.
