Red ‘n’ Green Family Recipes: Chocolate Revel Bars

This is the first in a series of Red ‘n’ Green family recipes. Each month a different Red ‘n’ Green staff member will teach you how to make a classic recipe from their family’s kitchen. They will also be looking into the history, stories and memories that are connected to it.

Chocolate Revel Bars are the perfect treat for any occasion. In my family they are traditionally made around Christmas time, but are also a staple at anything from birthday parties, to baby showers and weddings. They are simple to make, but look like you put in a lot of effort.
Begin by gathering all the ingredients.
Add butter, eggs, sugar and vanilla to a standing mixer or bowl.
Cream together at a medium speed for about two minutes or until it is smooth.
Then add all the dry ingredients to the bowl and mix.
* The bowl will be very full, and it might be a little bit of a mess at first. It will take a while for everything to be incorporated together. The consistency will be very thick and sticky, but that is what you want.
Then press a little more than two-thirds of the oatmeal mixture to the bottom of a 13×9 pan and set the pan and the bowl with the other third to the side.
*This is one of the most difficult parts. It takes some patience and time to get the base smooth due to how sticky it is. Just keep pressing it down with your fingers, or you can take the bottom of a clean measuring cup and press.
The next step is making the chocolate filling. Melt butter, chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and salt in a pot on low heat, stirring often.
Pour the chocolate ,while still warm, over the base layer and smooth it until even.
The last step is to take the remainder of the oatmeal mixture and drop pieces over the top of the chocolate layer.
Then place the pan into the oven at 350 degrees.
*I set the timer for 25 minutes which was the perfect amount of time.
The final product!
