Senior Callie Kurczek, who will play college basketball next year, is leading the team as captain.
“My sisters were both captains when they played so ever since middle school being team captain has alway been something I looked forward to,” Kurczek said.
Kurczek has been playing basketball since she was in second grade.
“My sisters inspired me to play basketball,” Kurczek said.
Kurczek has always looked up to her older sisters who taught her how to play and helped Kurczek find her love for the sport.
“I am going to Judson University to play basketball in college. I am already committed,” Kurzek said.
Kurczek’s teammates say that she’s very motivating and always sticks up for them.
“Callie is a good leader who wants the team to be successful. She pushes and encourages everyone on the team. We know we can count on Callie for motivation throughout the season and she is a fun teammate to play with during practice and in games,” junior Becca Bartol said.
Coach Ray Mlada says one of the team strategies is to get Kurczek as many shots as possible.
“Callie is our best player and is capable of scoring a lot of points if given the opportunity,” Mlada said.
Kurczek said that even though as a team they go through some tough times, they work through it together.
“This season helped me realize how difficult of a sport it is and the work we put in. We are in a good conference and it’s tough to compete with a lot of the teams. When we play our best we end up competing well with them, but we never know how the game is going to end up,” Bartol said.
On Jan. 14 the girls lost against Markesan, but they play Plymouth at home tonight.
“The season could be going better, but we are starting to come together better as a team,” Kurczek said.
The team relies on their captain to help navigate them through the game and make it easier when they face tough decisions.
“Callie benefits the team with her leadership and her skills on the court. Callie has been our leading scorer for probably every game so far and she is a big help on defense and the boards. She loves the game and keeps us focused while also having fun,” Bartol said.
