Every other Wednesday different clubs and committees meet. Chess Club, a new, unsung addition created one more spot this year. Headed by adviser Sarah Gumtow, the club aims to engage students in the world of chess, primarily by challenging and going against one another.
“I was approached by a BHS student, junior Nick Strum, who was looking for an adviser for the Chess Club, so the formulation of the club was entirely student-led,” Gumtow said. “In the past, I’ve advised a Game Club here at BHS, which has run based on student interest. The LMC has several chessboards and table space, so I’m happy to provide a space for the Chess Club.”
While chess may outwardly just look like a game, to some it is much more. Chess is made up of a series of calculated movements, and to win requires great focus.
“I’ve played in tournaments, those are very, very competitive. (Training) just includes a lot of practicing,” Strum said.
By being able to compete and play fairly against other people, skills and tricks can be easily learned.
“It’s helped me with finding different opponents to play against, to see how I can change up my strategies,” junior Troy Taylor said.
Chess requires patience, as every move is made precisely and with reason. It is a slower paced game, so by playing in a positive atmosphere, everyone can stay worry-free and calm.
“Participating in Chess Club allows students to think critically and problem solve while playing chess socially with their peers. Through the creation of their norms, our group of students has made it clear that they want to create an environment of kindness and good sportsmanship during gameplay,” Gumtow said. “Students are also very willing to help other students learn the game, which makes Chess Club ideal for all students, regardless of their level of skill.”
No matter when chess is picked up, from having years of experience to playing one’s first game, it can be a fun and enjoyable experience for all.
“Chess has always been very interesting to me; I like the strategy aspect personally,” Taylor said.
