After years of quiet preparation, senior Hailey Rodriguez was selected as Youth of the Year for Berlin in December 2025. The program is run through the Boys & Girls Club of America, which recognizes one exceptional member from each site who embodies leadership, academic success, service, and character. Candidates complete an extensive application process that includes recommendation letters, a resume, multiple essays, and formal interviews.
“It was a lot of work going into it. I have been shaping and preparing my work since eighth grade,” Rodriguez said. “It was very gratifying to finally get the title after I lost last year, so it was a very happy moment for me.”
Rodriguez first competed against four other candidates at her local site. Now, as the 2026 Youth of the Year, she traveled to Madison on March 9, 2026 to compete at the state level, where she delivered a three-minute speech about her journey, leadership, and the impact The Club has had on her life. She did not move forward from state, but it was a great experience for her.
“Going to state was definitely intimidating, but it was a great experience, and I got to meet so many amazing people,” Rodriguez said.

This year, Rodriguez approached the competition differently. Rather than only relying on her accomplishment, she allowed her vulnerability to guide her, demonstrating significant personal growth.
“This year, I decided to be a lot more open with my struggles,” Rodriguez said. “Last year, I was more closed off. I still had the mindset that my problems are mine and no one else should see them.”
Graduation Specialist Eydie Clark- Reiser says she believes what sets Rodriguez apart from other candidates is not just her accomplishments, but her heart.
“There are a lot of people who make great accomplishments,” Clark-Reiser said. “But not a lot of people who care that others do the same. Hailey has both.”
Close friends of Rodriguez see that same balance between determination and compassion. Junior Audrianna Reiser describes her as “very energetic” outside of school and always ready to take up new opportunities.
“She (Rodriguez) is very determined to finish her job at The Club well and perfectly, while still leaving room for the little imperfections that life throws,” Audrianna Reiser said.
Working at The Club herself, has made Rodriguez discover a calling to her future path.
“Working with the kids just proved that I was meant to become a teacher,” Rodriguez said, “I will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh to pursue a degree in education.”
Regardless of the outcome at state, Rodriguez will serve as the face of Berlin’s Boys & Girls Club for the year. She will be representing members at events and fundraisers and serving as a role model for younger students. Her desire to uplift others reflects her title wholeheartedly.
“I hope to show students and the younger kids at The Club that no matter what your story is, it’s worth being heard and worth being shared,” Rodriguez said. “Everyone’s struggles are valid. They deserve the light to go forward.”
