Berlin High School softball goes beyond the scoreboard; this year’s team tells more of a personal story.
For freshman Priscilla Gonzales, the season is just beginning, with her being excited about joining the team and being curious about where it might take her in her high school career.
“I was really passionate about it. I wanted to see how it was playing for a high school team now,” Gonzales said.
For senior Lakelyn Sobieski, those first experiences have now turned into memories, reminiscing about how much they’ve grown over the years.
“My favorite memory was hitting my first home run against Waupun,” Sobieski said.
Finding the right confidence in a position is a highlight for younger players, as it can help them get into their role on the team.
“I mainly play second base, but I’ve been playing more right field recently. I feel pretty comfortable with both of those positions, but I definitely like second base more,” Gonzales said.
With time out on the field and the experience, softball is more than a physical activity. Mental health is a big aspect as well.
“The mental toughness would be the most challenging. I overcame it by knowing my teammates are there for me, and the coaches are super supportive,” Sobieski said.
Over time, those moments of effort and time turn into valuable experiences that can go beyond when players are out on the field.
“Softball teaches me life lessons. You have to work hard to get things that you want; nothing you get is handed to you,” Sobieski said.
Moving forward, Gonzales wants to improve and set a goal for when it’s time for her senior year.
“I hope to be more comfortable with batting and not striking out, and to be able to play on varsity,” Gonzales said.
As Sobieski’s last year is slowly coming to an end, she shares some advice for the next players that will soon take her place.
“Stay positive, nothing is handed to you, it’s not magic, do what you have to do to succeed,” Sobieski said.
Head softball coach Kimberly Gensel shares the goal for the rest of the softball season.
“Obviously, to win games, but to help my girls reach their fullest potential on the field, as well as just making sure we’re having fun. I truly believe in the quote ‘Girls need to have fun to win, boys need to win to have fun,” Gensel said.
Softball has its next game on Tuesday, April 14th, and the last home game will be May 15th against North Fond Du Lac.
