Before COVID there was a microwave in the commons for students to use during lunch. For safety reasons during the COVID pandemic the microwave was put away into a storage room for the last five years.
“The microwave is available for any student to use and its purpose is to give students who bring food to school the option to have a warm meal rather than only being able to bring cold food or leaving campus to eat,” Student Council adviser Jennifer Leahy said.
Each week a different Student Council member is signed up and responsible for wiping out the microwave and keeping it clean. The hope with this microwave is that students will take care of it and it will remain in the commons.
“The Student Council had to get approval from Mr. Bednarek and the food service staff. Part of that approval was the Student Council creating a schedule to clean the microwave,” Leahy said.
Only high school students are allowed to use the microwave.
“I have wanted to get the microwave reinstalled since my freshman year, but it always seemed to fall through. Being a president this year and seeing even more need as students spend more time at school, I knew having a means to reheat their own food was important,” Co-President of Student Council Aleea Lichtenberg said. “It would be beneficial for students to bring in their own lunches for health and allergy reasons, but also to give students who stay after school for hours a chance to have dinner from home while at school.”
Student Council took a vote to see if the microwave was really the best option for BHS and it was decided that it was.
“To manage the microwave easier, and to make clean up more effective, the Student Council decided to only let the high school use it. This can ensure that the area stays clean and use of the microwave can continue,” Student Council member Braden Berndt said.
