White snow and wipeouts, ski lifts and slopes, these are things that members of the ski club participate in for four days during the winter months. Berlin’s ski club had their first trip to Nordic Mountain on Monday, Jan. 5.
“So basically, you come to ski on Nordic Mountain with us, we do four Mondays. You just sign up, if you need to rent gear you get a deal on that, you get cheaper lift ticket prices,” Ski Club Adviser Bret Steffen said. “And for $20 you get on the bus so you don’t have to worry about transportation. If you need to learn, you get free lessons for skiing or snowboarding. It’s just a lot of fun.”
Trips are scheduled ahead of time, on Mondays. Students leave after school at 4 p.m., and come back for pickup at 9 p.m.
“Usually it’s every other Monday so far, but there’s backup dates, and we go after school,” junior Riley Edwards said.
Steffen decided to become the adviser for the club this year, since he took up skiing again last year.
“A lot of the students I have in class right now are in the club. I knew they needed an adviser. I started to ski again last year after a long hiatus, and so it just seemed like ‘hey, I could go and help out, cheer on these kids that I like most of the time, and have some fun,’” Steffen said.
Students of any grade level are allowed to join ski club, including both middle school and high school students.
“Anybody can join, it doesn’t really matter,” freshman Owen Petraszack said.
Ski Club gives students the opportunity to learn how to ski or snowboard, join their friends, and have fun.
“I’ve been doing it for four years. It’s fun doing it with friends, so I thought why not?” Edwards said.
Students often ski and snowboard together and like to watch each other.
“I mean it’s also funny to watch people wipe out, that’s why I have to get a Go-Pro,” Edwards said.
