Scoring 1000 career points is more than just talent — it reflects years of hard work, dedication, and determination. For team captain Hayden Redington reaching that mark is a result of steady growth throughout his high school basketball career.
Head Coach Jeremey Mercer knew the possibility of Redington reaching 1000 points was clear after last year’s season. Redington was averaging 17 points per game last year, and then elevated his performance, which now has him averaging 21 points per game.
“We knew after last year that if he averaged what he did, he’d be able to hit 1000 at some point,” Mercer said.
Although the score numbers are impressive, Mercer mentioned that Redington’s success is built off of his work ethic. Redington is known as a lead-by-example player, and he has committed himself to improving every game.
“He’s an extremely hard worker,” Mercer said. “He’s worked really hard on his body and on his game, and it’s obviously resulted in a lot of positive success.”
For Redington, the milestone began to feel realistic a couple weeks before it happened. His focus remains on improvement, and one area he worked hardest to improve was finishing through contact. A majority of his improvement came from Mercer’s dedication to the team.
“Mercer would open up shoot-arounds on weekends and try to get us in the gym as much as possible,” Redington said.
Redington is the first this season to reach the 1000 point mark. He achieved this milestone, on January 13, in North Fond du Lac. To acknowledge the achievement, he received a basketball marked with “1000 points.”
“This means a lot to me,” Redington said. “It’s nice to be recognized for your hard work.”
Beyond just bringing the team points, Redington’s hustle and leadership elevate everyone around him. With holding the position as team captain, he isn’t afraid to hold teammates accountable while guiding them in the right direction.
“If you’re not doing something, he’s going to let you know,” senior Carter Hess said. “He’ll lead you in the right direction.”
After graduation, Redington plans to attend Augustana University in South Dakota to continue his athletic career playing football. As of February 5, 2026 Redington has 1,150 career points.
