Very few students reach the 100 wrestling wins, which requires them to have an incredibly high win percentage. Junior Ben Green recently reached this landmark during the Feb. 14-15 weekend sectionals, and will be going to compete in Madison for state.
“It’s your career record, basically. You just have to reach 100 total wins. Most guys don’t get it, especially junior year, so it’s a really big achievement if you get it in high school,” Green said.
Although there are no awards or prizes for reaching 100 wins, it’s still seen as an important feat. It’s considered a personal goal for many wrestlers.
“It’s important because I’m one of the first juniors in Berlin for a long time to move on to state,” Green said. “It means that I’m one of the top guys in the state now, which is something that I’ve worked for years to get to.”
Wrestling Head Coach Beau Yineman says that Green’s strongest attribute is his passion and interest in the sport.
“Ben has goals and aspirations to do well in wrestling. I believe he really enjoys the sport, even though it’s difficult; and when he’s not motivated, his passion keeps him going,” Yineman said. “To be truly good at wrestling you need to learn how to love the sport and love the grind.”
Green utilizes both his strength and skill when he wrestles to come out on top.
“Ben is a very technical wrestler; he uses his skills, he doesn’t just use his strength,” senior Jakob Martin said. “He’s able to just go into a match and do what he wants to do, rather than just overthink it. That’s what makes him good at wrestling.”
Both his wrestling partner, who also qualified for state, Martin, and coach Yineman have helped Green grow and progress into the athlete he is today.
“Definitely Jakob, and my coach, they’re probably the main reason I was able to get there. We work every single day, and they push me a lot, so I was able to move up while I was wrestling,” Green said.
