Berlin High School offers a variety of sports throughout the year. As the spring season begins, student-athletes must decide which sport they will participate in.
Some athletes chose their spring sport to keep them in shape for other sports, but they found a love for it and stuck with it.
“I picked track because it was the only option. It also helped with the other sport I was in for conditioning purposes, and then I fell in love with it, so I’ve never considered another spring sport,” track athlete Addison Petrazak said.
Some athletes stay in their sport because of the gameplay.
“I enjoy playing (soccer). I get excited when we have scrimmages or games,” senior Taylor Helmuth said.
Other students use lists and goals as a deciding factor.
“I made a pros and cons list over track and baseball. My impression on the coaches matters to me a lot. I had a lot of friends in baseball, and I could also make friends in track,” track athlete Matt Przybyl said.
Others are inspired by head coaches to show up for the first practice.
“Coach Willett and Coach Stellmacher insisted quite a few times, so I thought I would give it a try. Coach Stellmacher said it would help with football; Coach Willett said he would like to have me there,” freshman Karter Price said.
People can also use the process of elimination to help them decide.
“I’m not a track person. Softball, I can’t hit for crap. Soccer is an easy sport that I know the basics of,” freshman Sydney Van Ornum said.
Other athletes have revived their passion for an old sport.
“I just like it (soccer), and I used to be really good at it, so I thought I should try it again,” freshman Ahzayla Bell said.
Some are drawn back to the game because of the positive experiences they have had.
“The community is really good, everybody is fun with each other, and we always end up having a great time on the field,” Helmuth said.
