Despite the rainy weather, it never stopped the Berlin High School track team from pushing through any personal goals or overall trying their best to win. Sophomore Selci Sirrell broke her fifth school record on the 100-meter hurdles. Sirrell’s new record is 15.8 seconds on April 14, 2026, against the SCC Conference Quad in Berlin.
“It was good to get a meet in, we had a lot of meets canceled this year because of the weather. It was great,” Athletic Director and Co-Head Coach Joe Stellmacher said.
Besides all the weather conditions that went along with this season, Sirrell continues to grow and reflects on breaking her fifth school record.
“It feels good, and I never expected it. I just go out and do my best,” Sirrell said.
Her time and effort to the track team show throughout the many seasons of track, something Sirrell’s coaches are able to recognize in the dedication she has to the team.
“It’s pretty incredible. She’s a very talented kid, and she is a very good track athlete. She keeps her head on straight,” Stellmacher said.
Sirrell’s achievements also come with challenges. But knowing the right way to overcome those can be a big step toward overcoming those challenges.
“ My biggest challenge is picking myself up; my confidence can get really low, trying to keep my esteem up. I overcame this by saying it’s just a race and no matter what I do, people are going to be proud of me, and it doesn’t define me,” Sirrell said.
As the season goes forward, Sirrell wants to share advice with all the younger players who are striving to do their best.
“Stay confident and don’t get too hard on yourself. Try to have fun and don’t just let it consume your life,” Sirrell said.
Co-Head Coach Matt Willett goes more into depth about Sirrell and the naturalness she has to her success.
“Selci is a main contributor to our girls’ team. She has a ton of talent and natural ability to do things that many others work very hard to become successful at. She’s just naturally able to do some of the things that she is doing, mainly the hurdles that she is currently focusing more on. She really enjoys this sport, and it shows,” Willett said.
As Sirrell continues on with her success in track, Stellmacher shares some advice for all players to hear since the season has been a rocky start.
“Keep getting better every day, and stay healthy,” Stellmacher said.
